Reviews of "Piano Pieces" by Tom Bockhold

....." Great compositions with wonderful chordal harmonies and beautiful               impressionistic passages..."                     GEORGE WINSTON - pianist

Tom Bockhold has been a close friend and fellow musician for many years.  I primarily know him as a jazz bassist.  We have played many gigs and concerts together.  But, I'm also aware that Tom is a multi-talented composer, pianist, painter and teacher as well.  His compositions in "Piano Pieces" reveals Tom's "Romantic" and "Impressionist" side.  The pieces are highly musical and harmonically and rhythmically "colorful".  They are great for an aspiring pianist to play in recital.  I highly recommend these compositions to piano teachers looking for a fresh, new source of music for their students.  I'm sure they will enjoy playing them, too!         Congratulations, Tom

After reading thru Piano Pieces, playing the music and listening to the CD, I can say that I enjoyed your work very much. You establish unique melody lines, not ordinary like most of today’s music. There is continuity in your melodies that are logical and identifiable. The phrases have a unique line direction and forward motion, (they match). Even though the writing style is similar, each title has its own flavor and personality. The time and key changes reaffirms the uniqueness of your compositions. “The Gift” is a beautiful piece that shows versatility in your styles without time or key changes. “Oh Suzanna” – not a favorite tune, but your chord changes make it enjoyable. “Star Spangled Banner” – I always thought that F.S. Key (or someone) could have written a better national anthem. Taking it out of 3/4, your intro, chord changes and modulation at letter (C) make it a much better composition.  I tried to express myself the best I could. Please remember I’m only a piano player!  All the best Tom!    MARIO DESANTIS - founder of The Mario Desantis Orchestra, Syracuse, NY.

Tom Bockhold's Piano Pieces Volume 1 is a pleasure play. The songs may look complicated, but they are easy to sight read because of the various ostinato patterns in the left hand. The harmonic motion makes perfect sense and has interesting surprises. This is a valuable volume for it's musicality and accessibility.   Good job Tom!                                       STEVE CZARNECKI - pianist, teacher
